TREATMENT OF PRISONERS

LONDON, 17th May. In tho course of correspondence between the British and German.,-Govern-ments with regard to the treatment of British prisoners behind the firing lines, Mr.Balfour, in November last mentioned incidentally cases of irregularity in connection with two New Zealanderg whose parcels had not been reaching them. Private O. E. Coles, of the Ist Wellington Regiment, had not been officially returned a prisoner of war, but the Information came in a letter from another prisoner. A post-card addressed to Coles by tho Bureau de Secours at Bern 9 was returned by the German authorities with a notification that ho could not be traced. In the case of Sergeant B. F. Notley, 2nd Auckland Regiment, parcels had been sent regularly from 15th May, 1917, but nothing had been received by him up to September.
