PRESENTATION TO MR. J.S. BARTON, S.M.
Mr. John S. Barton, who has. been appointed a Stipendiary Magistrate, was made a presentation last evening by the Wellington Branch of the New Zealand Institute of Accountants, of which body he. was 1 president for three years, and in > the welfare of which he has always taken a keen interest. In making trie presentation, Mr. H. A. Gold said Mr. Barton was elected a member of the first council of the institute in 1909, and he' had occupied the position continuously ever since. His value to the educational side of accountancy was well known. Congratulatory and eomplimen tarv speeches were made by Messrs. Ei W. Hunt. ,C. Bowden, A. J. Petherick. H. Ivory, J. C. Port, T. Young, and H. P. yon Haast. Mr. Cold then handed Mr. Barton a handsome gold English lever watch, suitably inscribed.' In returning thanks, Mr. Barton said he could not help feeling proud of the part he had taken in the formation of the> institute. He mentioned that force of circumstances in' his youth prevented him' from entering the legal profession by the ordinary avenue; and he had be- ; come a member later irv life than usual without having been articled. He appreciated to the full the honour that had been done him in his appointment to the position he was about to assume, and concluded by expressing gratification at the kindly remarks which had been made in regard to himself.
