THE VESLE FRONT
AN IMPORTANT INDEX
THREAT TO GERMAN LINE OF
RETREAT,
(Received August 10, 2.45 p.nu)
LONDON, 9th August.
Writing on- Thursday, Eeuter's correspondent at the American Headquarters states V. In spite of bad wea.tLer, General Petain is continuing his advance.. He has already pushed a sufficient force across the Vesle to hold bridgeheads on the right bank. The enemy risks hay-, ing his line cut through at the weakest point,, and the severing of the northwestern end of the - plateau from the strongly-held ridges to , the east. Thus we are threatening the direct line of the retreat across the Aisne of tho force now holding the ridge.
