DEPLOYING FOR FURTHER ATTACK
THURSDAY .EVENING'S NEWS.
(BEUTER'S TELEGRAM.)
(Received 'August 10, 2.30 p.m.)
LONDON, 9th.August;
Renter's correspondent at French Headquarters, writing at 6 o'clock on Thursday evening, says : The battle on the Avre line is progressing well. ■■■ . On the whole front of attack , our troops have established themselves.' on the plateau overlooking the Avre Valley from the east, and are deploying on it for the continuation of the attack. There is every reason for confidence-.
, It must be remembered that a series of important local operations carried out on this front between the 2nd and .the sth August were successful in pushing back the Germans and taking prisoners. General de Beney since then has not re : laxed his pressure, with the result that he -held the banks of the Avre from Braches to beyond Harcourt, 'when the attack began to-day. '. ■ . The tendency in that direction is to the enlargement of the front at La Neuvillette,. north of Reims. It will be instructive to see how the enemy views these threats, as this will indicate . his strength. Anything confirming the impression of the German shortage of men will have a considerable weight in determining future strategy,
