WITH THE AMERICANS "OVER THE TOP WITH A YELL ' MEN BEHAVED LIKE VETERANS. (RBDTER/S TSLEfIRASJ.) (Received July 20, 3 p.m.) LONDON, 19th July. Renter's correspondent at the American headquarters reports: ' 'Large numbers of American storm troops went over the top with a yell, -without any artillery preparation. The Germans mostly resisted feebly; here and there stubborn fighters were quickly vanquished by the American bayonets. The enemy was everywhere completely surprised. The attack was most successful in the region of Soissons, where the final objectives were parsed. The whole operation is at present more successful even than was expected. Many guns were captured, including eighteen in one town. The whole German left flank is menaced, and the enemy must bring up his troops from the Marne front or leave them in danger. The Americans were trained to the last notch, and behaved like veterans. Nothing stopped them. There was the closest co-operation between the artillery and the infantry, and light and many heavy guns were moved up at high speed, and deluged the enemy forces with shells. The tanks did all that was expected of them, preceding and accompanying the infantry, and clearing many places that escaped the artillery. Hast-ily-organised enemy counter-attacks here and there were all broken. The resistance was stubborn east of Chaudun. ] The fighting is likely to become heavier as the German reserves arrive.
