REINFORCEMENTS INSPECTED
The 41st and 42nd Reinforcements I were inspected at Trpntham Camp this ! morning by Sir James Allen? Acting.., Prime Minister and Minister for De ■ ] fence, and Major-General Sir Alfred ■ Robin, Commandant, of the Forces. The principal officers present .were the Chief of the General Staff; Colonel C. M. Gib- ; bon, 1.G.5.; the Camp Commandant,: Colonel H- R Potter; and the Camp Adjutants/ Major'Sweetzer'and Captain Linkham. .The troops made an excellent display in the march past.
A correspondent, Percy R. Selby, j writing from 107. Collingwood-street, j Nelson, says : "As it is still an open question as to who was the' fii'3t person in New Zealand to " observo Nova I Aquilae, I beg to state that I saw it from here on the night of Sunday, the 9th of June, shortly after half-past eight. Do you know if anyone is report- ; ed to have seen it earlier than this? • for" the earliest reports I've heard of so far have' been ten minutes past 9 from' Dunedin, and 10.45 from Wellington, on the night in question." The particulars of the New* Zealand discoveries are as ; follow :—lt was reported to the Government Astronomer (1) by Mr. G. V. Hudson, of Karori, Wellington; (2) by ; Mr. Alex. G. Crust, of Dunedin; (3) by Sergeant-Major L. J. Comrie, on f active service. 1. Mr. Hudson reported tho discovery by telephone on the evening of Sunday', 9th June, N.Z.T. 2. Mr. Crust reported by letter dated 10th ; June, received 13th June. 3. 'S.M. Comrie reported by cable, received 14th June. Mr. Hudson's time of discovery >■ was lOhr. 45min. p.m. on Sunday, 9th June, equals June 8d 23hr. 15min., ', ■■ G.M.T. Mr. Crust's time of discovery ; was 9hr lOmin p..m. on Sunday, 9th 5 June, equals Juno 8d 21hr. 40min., • G.M.T. Information has not yet been ■- received from Mr. Comrie as to the time 6 of- discovery by him. In regard to Mr. t Selby's letter, his notification has come )■■ very late. The star has now been under observation for. nearly six weeks. j' The scientific practice is to record only f the names of those who:furnish the mll formation to the Official Astronomer '/ promptly. , - :, A first-offending inebriate who came • before Mr. S. E. M'Carthy, S.M., at the - Magistrate's Court this morning, was ', given the choice of paying a fine of 10e or going, to gaol for 24 hours. John ( Pryse, a second offender, was fined 20s, in default seven days in the cells. George Millar, who was charged with a '. fifth offence of drunkenness within six months, and also a breach of a prohibition order, pleaded for another chance, stating that he had been ill and unable to, work for. some time past, and was shortly going into hospital. The Magistrate decided to give Millar the chance he asked for, and convicted and ordered 1 him to come up for sentence when called upon.'; Edward Bloomfield, for a fifth offence 10l drunkenness within, six months, and.his'23rd conviction in all, was convicted and ordered to come up for senfence' when called up.' On, a charge of a breach of a prohibition order he was fined £2, in" default seven days in. gaol. A first offender, who appeared m uniform, was convicted and ordered to be " handed over to the military authorities.
