Cooperz, S.M., of Wellington, in im tied' dent which occurred in Mcileuworthstreet a littlo after 6 o'clock Jttiifc evening. A party of five, of which Mr. Cooper was one, was returning from ths races in a taxi-cub, and while proceeding along Molesworth-atreet ono of Miint, Cottrell and Co.'h horse-drawn lorries was met. The driver of the taxi, Michael Kearney, of Tinalcori-road, applied the brakes to steady the car, which turned to the left on the greasy road, and was struck on the side by a tramcar, also proceeding to town. The taxi was dragged for some distance, anil was jammed between the tram and the lorry. A shaft of the lorry penetrated the back of the taxi and struck Mr. Cooper in the back. He was seen to have been considerably injured, and was removed to Barraud's pharmacy, whero he was attended by Dr. Pattie, and' was afterwards removed to the Thorndon Private Hospital. The exact extent of Mr. Cooper's injuries is not known at the time of going to press, but his chest and back are badly injured, and his condition is still serious, though he is doing as well as could be expected. None of the other occupants of the taxi-cab are reported to have received anything more than slight injuries and a shaking. It was some little time before the wreckage of the taxi-cab was cleared away. At 3 o'clock this afternoon we learned from the Thomdon Private Hospital that there was no alteration in Mr. Cooper's condition.
