DAYS BAY LOAN

TO THE EDITOR.

Sir, —As a poll is to be taken shortly to'raise a loan for water and, drainage, it would be as well for property owners to vote against the loan being raised at the presen(},time. Tho first cost of the undertaking.- was about four thousand pounds; it is-now twelve, and, like many other drainage schemes will, before completion, run to fifteen, owing to scarcity of material. It is proposed to use spiral pipes for the water supply; they may last about six years; then -a new loan for new pipes. Mr. Morton stated at a meeting that he' could secure material for Ilia portion, but he did not say where the property owners were going to obtain their supplies from, as all the present pipes will have to be ripped up and new ones laid to the city. He inspected many of these connections. They will cost anything up to one hundred pounds, mainly high cost of material and labour. Each house will require to have a meter and tanks. It is proposed to drain through two septic tanks near the beach. This will be very pleasant. The present drainage of the City Council is through one septic tank, and judging by the way the people get past, it is quite enough. It would be an well for the City Engineer to put tho Council's property in order" for a start before going on with the other scheme. There are; I admit, one or two drains that are disagreeable. Let tfye; Hutt County Council see that they a¥e put in order. Are the rest of the property owners to suffer for these few? There are apparently only a few more residencesJhat can be built in the Bay. As {ar as Day's Buy is concerned, it is full. Compare the area to each house with ftona. Bay, which is fairly congested. The residents there »r$ not ■asking for drainage and \vater, as they know the present time is not the right time. Let the few who have disagreeable drains put them in order, and when a favourable time comes for material and labour, then one and all will entertain further proposals.—l am, etc., THOUGHT IT OUT. 11th June.
