DISPUTE BEFOKI-. CONCILIATION

COUNCIL,

i The metal workers' industrial dispute was before the Conciliation Council today, when the new demands made by employees and the counter proposals submitted by the employers were given consideration. The Conciliation Commissioner (Mr. W. Newton) presided, and the assessors were :—For the employers : Messrs. A. C. Mitchell, -E. E. Stonebanks, and J. Crabtree: for the union: Messrs. J. Regan, J. O'Brien, and A. Murray. The terms of the new demands have already been published. The principal provisions relate to hours and wages. The first clause reads:—£7 hours shall constitute a week's work. Eight hours and a-half shall be worked on each working day except Saturday, and four and a-half hours on Saturday. The hours so worked shall be between 8 a.m. and j 5 p.m. The wages asked fpr are Is 7d ■ per hour, with increases in the wages ■ for boys and youths, provision for over- j time and holidays, payment of "dirt" j money, and travelling time. The scope of the proposed award is a 20-mile radius of the Wellington Post Office. The counter proposals suggest a week I of 47 hours without any limitation of ; the hours to be worked each day. The , wages offered are Is 4d per hour. Prae- i tically, the employers are asking for a renewal of the terms in the existing award. Although a settlement had not been arrived at when The Post went to-press, several points had been disposed of.
