MEETING OF BOROUGH COUNCIL

■The fortnightly meeting of the Lower Hutt Borough Council was held last evening. Present: Mr. E. P. Bishworth (Mayor), and Councillors J. W. M'Dougall, W. Meldrum, W. Walton, J. Brasell, S. Clendon, W. Cotton, W. Kerr, A. J. West, and A. J. Hobbs.

Mr. E. P. Rishworth and Councillor W. Kerr were appointed delegates to attend a conference at Palmerston North for the purpose of forming a Hydro-Electric Power League.

The ex-Mayor (Mr. H. Baldwin) returned the cheque sent Mm in payment of his honorarium for the month of April, and suggested the handing of the cheque to Miss Douglas for the St. Dunstan's Hostel for Blind Soldiers and Sailors. Mr. Baldwin's suggestion was complied with. The Town Clerk advised that a request from the Rugby Football Club for .permission to charge Is and 6d on Bth June had arrived too late to be dealt with. Permission had not been granted. The request of the proprietor of the King George Theatre, that the requirements of the council in regard to the attendance of a fireman on Wednesday and Saturday evenings and a minimum of • sft -width of the aisles be waived, was held over until next meeting, when Councillor M/Dougall will move that the condition regarding attendance of a fireman be waived.

Mr. Trougliton is to be informed that the approaches to his gate are on his own property, and cannot receive attention from the council.

Mr. 0. Harper was appointed to represent the council as assessor at the next sitting of the Assessment Court.

Mr. G. C. Webb's application for an increase in salary was held over until the estimates were being considered. The Minister of Justice stated that he would obtain a report concerning the proposed new police station, and acquaint the council with same.

The Assistant Public Trustee advised that he was prepared to authorise the contractor to do everything necessary to complete the council's requirements in regard to the Harnett Estate subdivision.

The Town Clerk stated that notices had been served on several owners of property to carry out certain repairs required by the District Health Officer

On tho motion of Councillor West, it was decided to inform the Fire Brigade of the addresses of all the holders of licenses to store benzine.

In, reply to Councillor Brasell, the Mayor stated that so far more dogs had been registered this year than for the whole of last year. The attention of a billiard saloon-keep-er is to be drawn to an alleged nuisance on his premises, and he is also to be informed that, unless the nuisance is abated, his license would be taken away. The Inspector of Nuisances is to bo instructed to report monthly on the number of dwellings he has inspected. Steps are to be taken to include White's Line East, Randwick. Waterloo, and Back Waiwetu roads in the motorspeed bylaw. The Mayor brought before the council the danger to Melling Bridge owing to its being used by heavy vehicles, and also the danger to other traffic caused by motor-cars with dazzling lights. It was decided to refer these matters to No. 1 Committee. ENGINEER'S REPORT. The Engineer reported that the gas consumption for May showed an increase of 318,000 cubic feet over the same period last year. The returns for April showed that 1,456,000 cubic feet had been received from Petone, out of which 89,800 feet, or 6.12 per cent., had been unaccounted for. The cost of attending to consumers' fittings during the month had been £14 4s 3d, and the revenue obtained £12 15s, showing a loss of £19a 3d. Ten new connections had been laid during the month. The Hume-street culvert had now been completed at a cost of £94 13s Id. The estimate for the job was £103 10s. The Black Creek and several open drains had been cleaned. Te Momi Creek was now receiving attention. The fence on the Normandale hill had been repaired. The fences on the Wainui hill required attention. Repairs were being effected to the pound. Park-avenue, Military, Gracefield, Gracefield Estate, Waiwetu, Woburn, and Bollevue roads had been patched, and a pipe crossing laid under the footpath in Knights-road. The position of the motov notice boards on the bridge had Deen altered. The : restar on the main street was now being patched.
