THE TURF

FIXTURES. June 13 and 15—Gisborne Racing Club. June 21 and 22—Nayiler Park Racing Club. June 28—Hawkes Bay Hunt Club.

NOTES AND COMMENTS

(IX "SIR LANCELOT.")

The Winter Meeting of the Hawkes Bay Jockey Club will be held on Friday and Saturday, 28th and 29th itifit. The principal events are the Hawkes Bay Hurdles, of 300 soys, about two miles and a-quarter, and the Hawkes Bay Steeplechase, of 500 soys, about three miles. Nominations for all events close on Friday next at 9 p.m. with Mr. H. S. Moss (secretary), Hastings.

The Great Northern St. Leger winner, Bonnie Maid, worked with Sunburst (the Boniform gelding in J. M'Laughlin's stable) on Saturday morning. Justification, Dick, and other ' members of J. Ayres's team were out. Mill Queen has been having a spell since Ghe raced at Otaki.

Kauri King has' been paid up for in both the Winter Hurdles and. Winter Oats Handicap on the opening day of the (risbome Meeting. The Soult gelding won a race on each day of the Gisborne Meeting last June.

A. Goodman is taking Roumania. and Mount Victoria through, to the Napier Meeting on Saturday morning. The latter was given his first jump since being taken up, and jumped two fences safely.

Pot Pourri was in front of Preparation (full sister to Whakatina) in a half mile sprint, which took 52sec., at Trentham on Saturday morning.

An acceptance of four for the Gisborne Steeplechase, of 400 soys, is disappointingly small. One of the quartette, Sabrenui, is also in the Tramway Steeplechase, in which the field also numbers four.

The rising two-year-olds in work at Trentham have had some practice at the barrier, and ara fairly forward. Of J. 'W. Lowe's lot the Domostheues filly looks likoly to be ready for the early spring meetings. She is not so well grown as the Martian and Solferino colts in the stable.

The imported fillies by Marajajf andi Braxted in H. Telford's lot are going on the right way. They are usually spurted with the Bezoniau—Pearce filly.

Miss Lark was engaged in the Hack Steeplechase events at Napier Park, but her trainer (C Pritchard) does not consider her sufficiently forward to be sent up. She will be raced at Trentham. In the May Hurdles on tho concluding day of the Wanganui Meeting, Pursefiller conceded Kauri King a stone and a-half and a beating. Pursefiller is conceding nearly two stone in the Park Hurdles at Gisborne', and this difference may be sufficient to reverse positions.

Prince Delaware, who has quite recovered from tho injuries he received at Manawatu, was worked on the lead at Trentham on Saturday morning. Tho All Red—Ancilla filly in J. M'Laughlin's stable will race as Red ►Signal. She was better than Roumania on Saturday in covering four furlongs in 51£secs.

, Kisingham, who has been given a nomination in the Melbourne Cup, has been a great disappointment this season, but, like moso of the Rokeby tribe, may improve with age. H. M'Sweeney went through to Palmerston on Saturday to school Midnight Star at Awopuni this morning. He returns to-night, and will take Seadown through to Napier next week. He has also been engaged for Korero, Bandalero, and Midnight Star at the meeting named. So far he has not engaged to ride anything in the Open Steeplechase. C. Emerson went into camp at Featherston on Friday last. In view of the approach of the Winter Meeting the jumps at Trentham are being put in order. The sod and stone wails have both been built up to the regulation height. Occasion caught a cold a couple of days prior to the Otaki Meeting, and was in consequence not seen at her best at Otaki. She has been sent home to Featherston, to her owner, and will be turned out for the winter months.

A. and It. Reed were out on the tracks at Trentham on Saturday morning and rode a lot of exercise work.

Reparation, who is to make his first appearance in Mr. J. O'Me&ra's colours at the Wellington Meeting next month, ran half a, mile at Trentham on Saturday morning in 51ieec. Seadown looks none the worse for the trip to Wanganui and Auckland. His owner was on the track on Saturday morning. Ridden by H. M'Sweeney, Seadown jumped six hurdles safely. He is to compete- at the Napier Park and Hawkes Bay Meetings. E. Kingan is handling a two-year-old filly by Maori King—Concordia 11., a mare by Prudent King imported from Australia by Mr. E. J. Watt and recently shipped back to Sydney by the Australian owner. Silver and Black (by All Black), a winner at Ashburton this season, is the first foal of Concordia n.
