HUTT BOROUGH COUNCIL

Tlie fortnightly meeting of the Lower Hutt Borough Council was held last evening. Present:—Councillors J. Brasell (Deputy-Mayor), A. J. HoT>bs, A. West, ,W. Kerr, 8. Clendon, W. Cotton, W.

Meldrum, J...M'Dougall, and W. Walton.

Mr. F. Jenness wrote offering' to attend to the Post Office clock for the ensuing twelve months on the same- tercns as hitherto, viz., £20. The offer was accepted.

Mr. A. D. Kennedy wrote regarding the state of the road and footpath in front of his residence in Pharazynstreet. The matter was referred to the Committee of Inspection.. J. H. Walker, on behalf of the Patara family, wrote stating that if ihe council would erect the required fencing along the frontage of the Patara. property on Hutt-roatl he would undertake to ' sco that it was paid. The Engineer was authorised to estimate the cost, and parry out the .work, providing a cheque is forwarded.

The Wellington Hospital and Charitable Aid Board forwarded a statement of estimated expenditure and income for the year ending 31st March, 1919, showing that the proposed kvy on this borough would be ' £1540 17s 4d, as against £1123 13s for the past year (an increase of £416 14s 4d), equal to 37 per cent. •■ It was decided to hold over tho consideration until next meeting, when the Mayor would be present. The secretary of the Hutt Football Club asked the council to erect a barrier around the football field, to keep the spectators off. The Engineer was instructed to erect the necessary barrier.

The Inspector of Fire Brigades (Mr. Thomas F. • Hugo) ' pi'esented a report on .the King George Theatre. He made certain recommendations.

It was resolved that a license be granted to the King George Theatre as soon as the requirements of Inspector Hugo are carried out.

Miss Nora, • Knight, of Lower Hutt, was appointed assistant clerk in the borough office. Councillor West brought up the matter of the danger of storing benzine in tho borough. The inspector was instructed to look into the matter.

Councillor Kerr moved that in future when a testimonial is given to a member of the staff, the testimonial be read to the council before the council's seal is affixed. Councillor Hobbs did not see why the procedure of the past should be altered.

The Acting-Mayor suggested that Councillor Kerr give notice of motion.

Councillor- Cotton seconded the motion.

Councillor Hobbs moved as an amendment that the, matter- stand over till next meeting. There was no seconder to the amendment, and the motion was put and carried.
