37th REINFORCEMENTS AT
TRENTHAM
The 37th Infantry Reinforcements held ttieir sports gathering at Trentham yesterday. The various events all attracted numerous entries, and were keenly contested. Heavy rain setting in during the afternoon, several of them had to be abandoned. i
Chief among the items on the programme was the eross-counrry race, which, was held last Saturday. Some 800 co'mpetifciors assembled in the bayonetfighting grounds, and the signal to start was given by the Camp Commandant. The course was across the eastern parade around, and along outside the racecourse to Wallaceville-road, and then to the right,'through native bush, to the start-ing-point. The first man to finish was Private Joiinston, of C Company, a soldier who began his training in the Cl Camp at 3?eaitherston. He covered the three-mile course in 18Jr minutes. A Company won, 64 per cent, of their men finishing in time. D Company came second with 59 per cent., C Company third, with 52 per cent., and ,B Company fourth, with 48 per cent. Of all the starters 55 per cent, finished, as compared with 47 per cent, in a similar race held by the 36th R^iniorcements. The boxing contest for novices, held in the V.M.C.A. Institute on Saturday night, produced some of the most interesting, and exciting bouts.ever seen in Trentham Camp. On a basis of aggregate points, D Company came first, with A second, and C third. In the purely sporting events on yesterday's programme, D Company won the most points, while in the whole of the events C Company lead. The Chingford Reinforcements Challenge Cup for the highest aggregate points was won by C Company with 48 points ; D Company came next with ,46 points, A Company third with 40 points, and B Company fourth with 30 points. The Cup was presented to C 'Company, to be held until the draft sails, by Her Excellency the Countess of Liverpool, at a concert given by the camp training staff to tho 37th Reinforcements last night. ■ •■. •
