'PAYMENTS BY IMPERIAL GOVERNMENT. . . (BI TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION. 1) AUCKLAND, 21st March. The Prime Minister ' (Mr. Massey} stated in the course of a speech at Bombay to-day that the total payments since! March,. 1915, when the Government established the Imperial Supplies Department, till the middle of the present month amounted to £57,651,200, and another: £20,000,000 would be.added by the end! of the year. The items include frozen, meat, three years, £22,500,000; wool, two years, £22,500,000; cheese, three: years, £7,000,000 • butter, one year, £2;000.000. Mr. Massey added that the estimated payments for butter during the present season were £1,689,000, and probably; would be exceeded. Ten years ago the, export of cheese from New Zealand amounted to 121.522 cwt., valued at £376,000, whereas the quantity- exported, last year represented £3,804,000. In the Auckland province 58 cheese factories were now operating'compared with 13 ten years ago. SA greater part of the in-crease-had been in the last four or five years.
