NOTES ON THE SPORT

(BT "SIR LANCELOT.")

The weather conditions which prevailed at Bulls yesterday were a great improvement on the opening day. The attendance was larger, than on Wednesday. The amount handled at the totalisator for the meeting showed an increase of £9639 compared with the previous meeting. Mr. H. A. Goodall (secretary) managed the gathering in a capable manner. Astrophel was produced in the Greatford Handicap, in which Parisian Diamond carried more than double the amount invested on any of the other runners. Rawakore, Coropett, and Starengo le"d for half a mile, where the top-weight was well placed. Parisian ■Diamond took charge at the distance, and finishing strongly won in good style from Starengo, whose got a much better price than followers of the favourite. Parisian Diamond was the only double winner at the meeting. He has now won three times in succession, and will make his next appearance in the Easter Handicap at Ellerslie. After delaying the start for the Rahgitoto Hack Handicap, Turangapito, top weight and a good second favourite, got well away and led throughout. The consistent Rajput, who was best backed, beat all the others. The Gisborne-owned Marenga and Self Alliance were next to finish. ' . ■Told was the only scratching for, the San'don Hack Hurdle ■ Race. Want, the first day's winner, ■ was sent out favourite> -but could not act under ..his heavy load. Calais, second favourite, was expected to make improvement, but did nit shape any better. Sail Hqme and Calais .led- past the stand, with Kclyhead next, but at t,he back of the course Dasher Boy took charge, and was not afterwards ' headed. Foeman and . Vacuum challenged at the bend,, and the latter made a good effort to reach the winner, but failed. Dasher Boy is a, Gisbome-bred gelding, by Strowan, but is trained at" Wanganui by H. Eayner. . ■

Hush Lad, Transmission, and Whiro carried most money in the Maiden Hack Handicap. Whiro, who started on the outside, began smartly, and led throughout. 1 Transmission and Moutoa . Camp were his nearest attendants at the finish. The latter is a half-brother to Master Moutoa, and is trained by F. Tilley for F. S. Easton. ' Whiro, who was placed on the previous day, is a black gelding by Advance and carries the same colours as Demos, i

All the acceptors for the Fraser Memorial Stakes were paraded." After' his goad, showing on.the previous day, backers sent Gold Soult out favourite. Merrie Gain and Kiltess made the pace for about seven furlongs, Ivvhen Gang Awa' assumed control. He looked likely to^ score at the turn, but halfway down the running Gold Soult came with a strong run on the outside, aijd overhauling the leader about fifty yards from the post, won in a decisive manner. Kiltess, the Cup winner, finished fourth, and,. Nobleman, who did no better than on the previous day, fifth. Mr. Prosser was not present to see Gold Soult win. / ,

Backers considered the distance of the Pukehou Hack Welter would suit Colorado better than the shorter journey he contested on : the previous day, and he was sent out a good favourite. He be-_ gan well, but was quickly headed by Manu, who was three lengths clear as they raced along • the back, - where Reparation and Fore were also in the van. xVlanu swung round the bend with two lengths' advantage, and was clear in the straight., Half-way down the running the favourite, put in-a claim, and, finishing well, got the judge's verdict by a narrow margin. Con and Warmth were close up, third and.. fourth respectively. Colorado has been a 1 consistent performer all the season, and has seldom been out of a place. . The competitors in the Itaumai Welter included Coropett, who had contested the Ureatford Stakes earlier in the day. Ohiwia and 'Cello were the popular picks. George began best, and, with "'Cello and Coropett, was prominent for the greater part of the journey. Ohiwia was badly placed three furlongs from home, but gradually improved her position, and just failed to beat • Coropett, who was handled in a confident manner by H. Gray. 'Cello just, beat George for third place. The Farewell Hack Scurry- was a good betting race, with Staccato (runner-up to Rajput on the previous day) a good favourite. The Gisborne-owned Orawa,i (a stable-mate of Miironga) began best, and led throughout, winning with something to spare from Staccato, who wp.s conqeding the winner over 2sfc in weight. Piano and Anitra were next.
