DEATH OF MR. JOSEPHMANDEL
I The death occurred in..the Davis-street i Hospital last night of Mr. Joseph'Mandel, J- one of Wellington's best known business men. Mr. Mandel returned from Christ- ; church on Saturday in- good, health and ! spirits. A. fe\v hours after his arrival he i was taken ill. On Monday he was opej rated on for acute-appendicitis, but he gradually sank and passed ■■ away at 8 o'clock last night. Deceased, who was ' 62 years of'a'ge, came to Wellington ag a youth of 18 in 1875, and soon after landing he entered the service of the.Railway Department. Later on he, became a on Lambton-quay, and then I acquired a large business in the same line lin Willis-street. About twenty years ago he became licensee ,of the Club Hotel, Masterton, and afterwards purchased the Empire Hotel; Wellington. Selling out his interest.in this property, he acquired interests in the Grand Hotel, Wellington, the United Service Hotel, Christchurch, and the Grand Hotel, Dunedin, besides taking'part in the establishment of marble bars at Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch. He was also senior partner in the firm of Mandel and Carr, wholesale .jewellers and importers in Wellington. He was one of the founders of the' Karon Golf Club, of which he was once captain, and he was also a I member of the Wellington Bowling Club. [For a number of years he was president of the Wellington Synagogue. The late Mr. Mandel was a keen business man. He was of a genial disposition, a liberal" contributor to patriotic and '. charitable objects, and was very well! I liked. . . .
: The deceased leaves a widow (nee MisQ Lyons) and a family of two. sons and three, daughters. His eldest son is Dr. Leo Mandel, of the. staff of the Royaj LNaval Hospital at Edinburgh.. The other son is Master E. Mandel, at present a student at Wellington; College. .• The I "daughters are Mrs. E. J.Hyams, of KelIburn; Mrs; J. Salmon, of London; and Miss G. Mandel. '
The funeral took place this afternoon.
