HOTEL WORKERS' AWARD
The Arbitration Court agreed to-day to amend the Private Hotel and Restaurant Workers' Award in the direction of striking out the word "now" in the following clause:—"Workers covered by Part 11. of this award, who aro engaged in establishments which are now closed for business on Sundays, and who under the preceding paragraph of this clause received their full day's holiday on Sunday, shall be entitled, in addition to such full day's holiday, to a half holiday from the hour of 2 p.m. on one of the working days of the week." Mr. E. Kennedy, who appeared for the union, stated that, the employers and some of the Labour Department officials interpreted the word, "now" to mean that the clause ' applied only' to those establishments which were in business at the time the award came into force. If that was 1 so those employers who established their business after the award was made, and who did not open for business on Sunday, need not give their employees a weekly half-holiday. Mr. W. A. Grenfell, who appeared for the employers, agreed to the alteration.
