To the general mind the word "theft" suggests coin of the realm, or jewellery, or the like, perhaps because pictureshow wrong-doere invariably, deal in such goods, but the real thief is not nearly so particular. Recent thefts in Wellington include a half-sack of coal, a five-gallon keg of beer, a fifty-eix-pouiid box of butter, an assortment of vegetables from a Chinaman's shop, a pair of boots, and a set of military blankets. This morning James Keenan, a fireman on a vessel in port, was charged before Mr. S. E. M'Carthy, S.M., at the Magistrate's Court, with the theft of forty-four pounds of euga'r: When arrested he stated that he had bought the sugar, and was taking it home to his wife, but enquiries point to the fact that he stole the sugar from the ship's megs allowance, and had no intention of taking it to his wife, as he is a single man, as far as the police can ascertain. As the master of his vessel requires Ills services Koenan was. dealt with leniently. A fine of £5, in default one month's imprisonment, was imposed.
