EARLY HISTORY OF NEW ZEALAND
The collection relating to the early history of New Zealand that, is being worked up by the Historical Committee of .the Board of ■Science and Art consists of two sections, viz., printed papers and manuscript documents. A very valuable addition to the former has been received at the Dominion Museum from the Duhedin Athenaeum, in the form of sets of the Acts and Proceedings of the Provincial Councils of Auckland, Wellington, Nelson, and Otago, together with similar official publications. These early works are • now almost unprocurable, and are a. valuable addition to the national collection. An interesting early book, Matthew Flinders) "Terra Australis," published in 1814,' has been received from Mrs. D. Scott, of Wellington. Recent purchases include a fine, calf-bound copy of "Cook's Three Voyages," published by William Anderson in 1781, which contains an "authentic, entertaining, full and complete history of Cook's Voyages, undertaken by Command, " from 1768 to 1780. The work was originally published in 84 sixpenny numbers, and, as the publisher states, "enables every person, whatever may be his circumstances, to become familiarly acquainted with those extraordinary and important voyages and discoveries in the performance and prosecution of which such vast sums of the public money have been expended."
