MR. HOLLAND AT KELBURN

The Kelburn Kiosk was well filled last night, when another speech was given by ( , Mr. H. E. Holland, official Labour candidate. Mr. P. Fraser presided. Mr. Holland directed a great portion of his address to a criticism' of war profits. The National Government, he said, if it had been composed of statesmen of any ability* would never have permitted this to happen. He referred to the, dealings m wool, meat, and butter, on the lines of previous speeches. Concerning scheelite, he said that ha did not blame the company concerned, as he believed it was losing money, but surely if scheelite could have been sold to Germany before the war at a little over £108, the Government could have taken the mines— the company said they were offered— and have supplied scheelite to the Imperial Government at an increase of 20 per cent, at the least. " Dealing with education, Mr. Holland said,: "Your aggregation of political mediocrities have reduced expenditure for this pilrpose." Even Germany had set a better example by increasing expenditure on, education. Mr. Holland affirmed his outright opposition to conscription. He was in favour, he said, of making it possible for everyone to go to the front who wished to, but he was not in favour of sending anyone. ' ■

Mr. Holland received an attentive hearing. There were ope or two questions—mainly dealing , with conscription. Afterwards a motion of thanks to and confidence in the candidate was carried on a-show of hands with two dissentients and a number of people not voting.
