A builder named A. L. M'Duff was proceeded against by the City Corporation to-day'for'erecting a building before a permit was issued. ' The defence 'was that two of the men employed by defendant had been called lip by ballot, and the work was rushed ahead* in orderthat it might be completed before they went into camp. Mr.' J. O'Shea, City Solicitor, said that M'Duff had committed.' the same offence before. On one occasion he had been "fined £2. and had sincfi been warned, but on this occasion the building was erected and the paper on' the walls before ' aiiy application reached the Corporation offices.. Mr. S. E. M'Carthy, S.il., imposed a fine of £5, costs 17s 6d, with the option of a month's imprisonment. . '
A street hawker named John Millanta, who was brought to Court a fortnight ago, charged with refusing to move his barrow on when requested to do so, was given, another chance, but he offended ngain during this week, and his case was brought on at the Magistrate's Court to-day. Mr. H. F. O'Leary, who represented defendant, said ■chat Millanta on this occasion had not made a "stand" in tiie street, but'left his barrow unattended while he went into a barber's snop. Mr. S. E. M'Carthy, S.M.. imposed sane of 30s and costs. "That man," said Mr. O'Leary, "had better leave his barrow at home when he goes to have his hair cut in future."
