Sir Joseph Ward, Postmaster-General, left for the North by the express to-day, and is to open the Dominion College of Radio Telegraphy in Auckland to-mor-row afternoon. .

Mr. Chirnside, a well-known squatter of Victoria, has arrived in New Zealand from Australia.

Mr. C. C. Kettle, senior Stipendiary Magistrate, who underwent an operation, is making a slow recovery.

Mr T. G. Hirst, manager of the Bank of Australasia 'at New Plymouth, has received notice of his transfer to Invercargill, and will be succeeded by/Mr. W. H. Eobertshaw.

Mr. D. R. Caldwell, of Messrs. Macky, ; Logan, and Caldwell, who recently returned from England, is at present in Wellington. He will return to Auckland about the end of the week. • ,- '

Mr. Thos. Chivers, for many years connected with the Post Office in Christchurch, is dead, aged 76. Deceased was a prominent Baptist, and held the diploma awardea by the British Sunday School Union for 50 years' continuous service.^

Mr. A. <3. Wise, who left Wellington a few yeaTs ago to become general manager of the Melbourne Herald, has been granted leave of absence in order that he may apend a holiday in America. He is at present in Wellington, accompanied by Mrs. Wise, who will also visit the United States.

Mr. A. Levy, of Wellington, has re-", ceived 3 cable from liis'son, Capt. Louis Levy, R.A.M.0., informing him that he is leaving, acompanied by his wife, on a visit to New Zealand. Capt. Levy has been at the front fov over'two years doingl good work at a,' casualty clearing station, and intends spending a wellearned rest in New Zealand.

From Melbourne comes word of the death, at the age of 41, of Mr. Harold Lyon, second son of tho late Mr., H. ■ M. Lyon, of Wellington. The deceased, who was a native of Wellington, completed his education at Wellington College, and was subsequently on the staff of an insurance company in this city. He revisited Wellington about two years ago. He leaves' a widow and a son, the latter being eight years of age.

Mr. Edward Griff en,: of Allenton, South Canterbury, who died at Reefton Hospital, was a well-known sportsman and horseman. Some twelve months ago he was taken ill, and was, operated upon at Reefton Hospital for appendicitis-, and later returned-^home. He went back to the Coast in December, with his 1 horse Chudic, which raced at several of the summer meetings, there. Mr. Griff en was again taken ill, and a second operation became necessary, from which he did not recover. In former years' he piloted the winners of several important events on various New Zealand racecourses. At different times he acted as trainer for well-known horse-owners, including Mr. J.'Cl N. Grigg, Mr. J. R. Hart, Mr. A^ Dale, and Mr. Hugo Friedlander. Deceased was 52 years of age, and leaves a widow and family.
