STATE COAL CONTRACT.
Suggestions of a State coal monopoly m New South Wales are recalled by the cabled advico that the Victorian Government has concluded an arrangement with the New Bouth Wales Government for the supply ;of 200,000 tons of coal annually for two years. Lately there has been muoh discussion in the Australian press regarding this question. During • the strike tho New South Wales Government assumed control of the mines, and ape rated a number of thorn, and it was suggested that this control might become permanent. Without assuming partial or monopoly control it is difficult to see how the Mother State could enter into euoh a large contract,'as the Government is not at'present a large-scale mine owner. If there is to be State ownership of the mines there may be also State trantportation and distribution, though, of course, this is not a necessary consequence. In New Zealand we have State mining and distribution, but ■ private transportation by sea.'
