LABOUR NOTES
(By D. O'J.)
4n important decision is that arrived at by a ballot of members of the New Zealand Agricultural and Pastoral Workers' Union approving a proposal for amalgamation with the big Australian workers' union. Lately the two organisations ■fTa.ve worked together, but there has been no definite union Whether amalgamation will mean much more than is already obtained depends upon its terms and upon Bubsequent administration. Hitherto New Zealand unions and associations have not evinced .a strong desire to combine with Australian organisations. The eeamen have what amounts to one federation, the Merchant Service Guild is one body, and the Amalgamated Society of Carpenters and' Joiners under its old constitution was united with Australia through the present body. In other cases, for example with the waterside workers and slaughtermen, there has been co-operation without definite or stated obligations on either side.
