NOTES AND COMMENTS

(BI "6111 LANCELOT.")

The Rotorua Meeting on 27th February clashes with Dannevirke. Starter C. O'Connor will not be able to act at Dannevirke, and Mr. Angus Keith, whose work at Manawatu, Marton, and Foxton meetings came in for favourable comment, will be in charge of the barrier.

The imported horses Moulin Rouge (Martagon—-Frivolity) and Snow King (Willonyx—Snowflight) were among the winners at the Canterbury Park Meeting on the 15th inst.

Desert Gold is to have a rest at Randwick for a few days, and will then be taken on to Melbourne, where she will make her first appearance at Cculfield on 16th February, when she will contest the St.' George's Stakes, nine, furlongs. The Futurity Stakes, seven furlongs, is run a week later.

Prom Opaki it ie reported that Hymestra may have to be spelled for the rest of the season. The Hymettus colt carried Mr. Kemball's _ colours at two meetings and did well to win 1800 soys in stake*.

Comedy King has arrived at his new home, Pranjip Park, Murchison East. He will be given every opportunity there, as Mr. N. Falknerhas a very fine collection of mares, one of the best in Australia.

Cynic, whose name appears among the horses handicapped for the Gisborne Meeting, has been engaged in the Australian and Sydney Cups.

. It is expected that Fiery Cross will make his next appearance in the Great Autumn Handicap, in which he ran second to Kilboy twelve months'ago. Imported Amanus, who won the Epsom Purse on, 13th inst., had not previously shown any form worthy of note in Australia, though he raced at two and three years old. He is by St. Amant from Sweet Bay, and figures among Messrs. A. and G-. Tye's nominations in the Newmarket Handicap, Australian Cup, Doncastor Handicap, and Sydney Cup. St. Ibex, another winner at the Epsom Meeting, includes the Oakleigh Plate in his list of engagements. In addition to Amanus there was another imported winner at Epsom. This was Polybius, by Polymelus from Berylium (imp.) (dam of Brolly), by Berrill.

Mr. W. Duncan had four horses racing at the Foxton Meeting, and wag successful with First Line (Advance —Ballarat) and Coolpan. First Line, is a full brother to the, Trentham-trained Pervolo.

At the last meeting at Tauherenikau tickets on the totalisator were 10s, no fil ones being issued. This led to a lot of bother and confusion, and at the next meeting the old order of things will be gone back to. At the Canterbury Park Meeting, on the 15th inst., Mr. E. J. Watt won a Jumpers' Flat Race with the well-bred Pro Tern (Comedy King—Problem). W. H. M'Lachlan had the mount. <.

The Takapuna Meeting will be concluded on Monday next. .■,*■•' A new race on the programme of the Wairarapa Racing Club's Autumn Meeting next month is the Soldiers' Cup, of 250 soys, a mile and a. distance.

R. J. Mason informs the writer that Biplane may make his reappearance in the Jackson Stakes at the Wanganui Meeting next month. Impediment, who has had a let up since she raced at Manawatu, haa been entered in three events at tho Gishorne Meeting. ■ Several of the successful competitor* at the Wellington Trotting Club's Meeting are engaged at the Forbury Park Meeting, to be held on the., 31st inst. If numerical strength can be said to count for much, Messrs. Robinson a.nd Clark and A. and G. Tye wotild appear to possess better prospects of winning the Australian Cup • than any other owners engaged. The former partnership haa five representatives, and bo haa the other, and among the contingent which Messrs. Robinson and Clark control is Lanius (who bo sadly disappointed a. great crowd of persons by hie failure in the last Melbourne Cup). Another is King Offa (imp.), while among Messrs. Tye's horses are Amanua (imp.)> Amantes (imp.), and • Blackwood (imp.). In addition to the five horses 1 mentioned, Messrs. Kobinson and Clark's representa; tives .in Australia include Magpie, Cogd'oi-, Lucknow, and Michael the Brave, and they will give some idea of the extent tc which these sportsmen have entered into the racing business in Australia.

The writer recently' heard of a new way to get rich quick at the races. One of the new Bank of New Zealand tenshilling notes neatly folded and tied in a knot is presented for a ten-shilling ticket, with the figure 10 printed on the corner showing. The person, presenting the note says to the seller, "That is a tenner," and the unsuspecting clerk puts the note away carefully and give* £9 10s change. The writer understands it was successfully worked at Hastings and Trentham recently. No doubt the tryon will be attempted at other meetings. •
