LONDON, 16th January. Sir Douglas Haig. reports: There has been the usual exchange of artillery fire.. Our aeroplanes last;night dropped a ton of bombs on the Thionville (or Diedenhofen) steelworks, midway between Luxemburg and Metz, and a further {lalf-ton on two large railway junctions in the neighbourhood of Metz. There yvero considerable anti-aircraft gun and searchlight barrages, but all our machines returned. \ LONDON, 15th January. Sir Douglas Haig reports: We repulsed a strong raid north-eastward of fi.nnentieres. We raided the enemy's lines northward of Lens, bombed dugouts, and took prisoners. • " ATTACK REPULSED NEAR VERDUN (Received January 17, 10.20 a.m.) LONDON, 16th January, A' French communique states: There are violent artillery actions on the Beaumont-Caurieres Wood sector, on the right bank of the Meuse. An enemy attack in the Chaume Wood, on a front of 200 yards, was broken by our artillery. A few of the enemy who gained a footing in an advanced element were immediately thrown out.
