BALLOT APPEALS
MILITARY SERVICE BOARD
TO-DAY'S SITTING.
. This morning the Third Wellington Military Service Board continued its sittings in Wellington. Mr. W. H. S. Moorhouse presided, with him being Mr. M. J. Mack and Mr. A. O'L. Considine. Captain P. Baldwin represented the military authorities.
Mr. W. A. Kennedy, local manager for the Union Steam Ship Company, Ltd 1., appeared in support of the employer's appeal for exemption on behalf of Horbert T. Atehison, marine engineer on an oversea vessel.—Exemption sine die was granted on the usual conditions
A good part of the morning was taken up in hearing the appeals lodged by the Seamen's Union on behalf of a largo number of seamen and firemen. Mr. J. Adams, president of the union, appeared, and as a result of the evidence tended by him, exemption sine die, on the customary conditions, was granted in the case of the following men : T. B. Fisher, A. M'Lellan, P. L. Tulloch, M. L. Fowler, V. Pollard, W. B. Downham, G. Day, J. Gourlay, E. J. Monaghan, W. M'Kay, A. Barnett, B. M'Neill, C. F. Robertson, M. Collopy, D. M'Call, G. F. Port, M. J. Murphy, A. Olsen, J. Scott, S. J. Maline, E. Leen, F. V. Bogers, W. Tresize, P. Cox, W. J. Wilson, J. Ward, A. Powell, G. Cruise, J. St. Clair, W. Marshall, P. Moore, C. L. Amyes, E. Lush, J. H. Hume, N. Usher, T. Rimmer, J. R. Faulkner, J.. .Morley, J. P. Clark, J. Mahoney, F. J. Wigmore, T. Aronga. E. Bankin, E. Lynch, A. Dryden, A. M'lnnes, and W. Armour.
The appeal of Albert William Bradbury, shipwright, was adjourned until 23rd January, and the individual appeal of Reginald Pierre, a coloured seaman, was adjourned sine die.
Wrong classification resulted in the allowing of the appeals of Joseph Thomas Bowers, bricklayer, and Harry Bates, carpenter, each of Brooklyn. Marriage and birth certificates proved that the men are in later classes of the Second Division. Mr. C. D. O'Donnell appeared in support of the latter appeal. ' A three mouths' adjournment was granted to.Peter James M'Kee, a married man permanently empl6yed as a wool-classer by the Gear Meat Company at Petone.
There was no appearance on behalf of William .Charles Cook, marine engineer, Wellington, and his appeal was dismissed. . Certificates of marriage proved William David Jones, marine engineer, -and Stanley J. A 1 Court, tramway motorman, to be in later classes of the Second Division, and their appeals were allowed. ■ A similar course was followed in the case of Harry Adams, driver, Torystreet, who satisfied the board that he was in Class C.
In the case of Jasper Ashworth, lab ourer, a certificate that he was over the age limit, resulted in his appeal being allowed. He is the possessor of a South African war medal, with six bars, and said he had twico enlisted for service in the present war, but had been rejected. John W. Bailey, carrier, was proved to be in Class D, and his appeal was allowed. In the case of George J. A. Blackie, letter-carrier, the appeal was also allowed. He was married on sth April, 1915, has one child, and is consequently in Class B. James Walter Bolton, nail-maker, Arostreet, also satisfied the board that he was in a later class, and in the case of Edward E. Brown, plumber, Wellington, an adjournment was granted until the first sitting of the board in June. This was in order to enable him to send to England for certificates.
A tram conductor named Alfred Ernest Cocker, had his appeal allowed; not being in Class A. '
Being over age enabled Bernard Martirj Connolly to have his appeal allowed. In the cases of 'David H. Costley, storeman, Taitville, and William Ewart Dempster, boot clicker, Kilbirnie. it was shown that they were not in Class A of the Second Division.
There was no appeai'ance in the case of William Patrick Gonrick, carrier, Petone, and the appeal was dismissed."
