EAST OF JERUSALEM

SCATTERED TURKS ADOPT GUERRILLA TACTICS

A SUCCESSFUL ATTACK AT DAWN

(UtTBS'B TttEStAM.) (Received December 20, 1 p.m.)

LONDON; 19th. December. Reuters correspondent at the Palestine front, writing on Monday, states that the. troops east of Jerusalem are active in straightening out the line. When the Turks were driven from the defences of the city 6ome of them retired to the north, and others to the eastward, where they were joined by reinforcements from Jericho. These adopted guerrilla tactics, and split into numerous small bodies, attacking outposts and sniping patrols. The roughness of the country between Jerusalem. and the Jordan facilitated such tactics.

In order to improve the line, the troops from the Home Counties were ordered to take certain ridges, which afforded a wider range for defence. The attack was made at dawn, all the objectives were quickly reached, and 150 prisoners taken, despite stiff resistance by the enemy for a time. Oar stretcher-bearers were heavily fired on while collecting tho wounded.

but persisted in their duty with admirable coolness.

Amongst the prisoners are.some youngsters more fitted for the schoolroom than the battlefield.
