THE TURF

NOTES AND COMMENTS

(Bl "Sill LANCELOT.")

Pennon, the Feilding Maiden winner, is the first representative of Coriander to race in the Dominion. I cannot remember any of his progeny racing in Australja. Coriander is a beautifully-bred, horse by Spearmint, Carbine's best son in the Old Country, from Admiration, who bred the winners of forty-two races of the value of over £52,000." They included Pretty Polly-and Veneration TI (dam o. Craganour). Coriander, who was bred by the late .Major Surface Loder only raced three times as a two-year-old, and once as a three-year-old and retired to the stud .early. As a two-year-old he met Absurd—the horse importer by Mr. G. Cunie, who also imported Eulogy-a n d beat him in the breat Sapling Plate. Coriander also ran second to • Charmian in the Criterion htalrea, and was unplaced in the Wynyard Plate. On hie only appearance as a tnree-yea.r-oH he was unplaced'in the Chesjer Vase. Coriander traces back to luilogy, ■ the third dam of Carbine. Bred as he is, the colt by Absurd from Eulogy should turn out something above the ordinary. ,' ■ Mli. D- ,Wilkie informed me at Feilding .that the horses he purchased it the Karamu sale would be trained by Stuart Waddell at Hastings. C. Emerson and J. O'Shea, will ride' Hie members of F. Davis's" team at lillersJie. , The trainer named is taking up a. fairly large team. Lingerie is the third winner of the lending Stakes. J. Farmer has trained. Ihe previous ones were -Elevation-' and Provocation, both owned by Mr. W E nidwill. In the light of her subsequent form, it looks s« if Lingerie was unlucky in the Stewards' Handicap. Her weight in. the Railway Handicap is 8.1, not (.10 as appeared in some papers, and a, penalty for the .Feilding win increases her poundage to 8.4. She is also en-ga-red in the Pslmeraton North Stakesand handicap 1 events- at Awarmni at Christmas time, but- will probably be found competing at Ellerslie. . Visitors from NewjPlvmouth and Wellington motored through to Feilding "on Saturday, and -'returned "the same day Increasing; the railway fares has made the wain journey., niore expensive than travelling by road, while the motor-cars effect' a great saving of time. To attend a meeting at Feilding (held on a Saturday) from New.:.Plymouth-.: would take four days by rail to witness the racing and do the return journey, whereas by road' it can be done comfortably in' W day. •■'. .... ' , ■ J J. Farmer is taking the two-year-old* ypratress through to the Wairarana MeetInS- : . . ■ -.

Besides Simonides, Mr. Troutbeck has both Form Up and Elocution in- the Railway Handicap. One of the -last-nam-ed pair will probably be started on the day: ■.- . ■.-.-.' • . . ,

_H. J. Jefferd is taking Vagabond and Sheila through -to-the Auckland Meeting. Uhortle and other members of his team will probably be racing at Awapuni. Welcome Nugget is training on satisfactorily at Hawera.i J. Fryer informs me that, he will not he required to race before the autumn meetings. * Turangapito is one.of four horses purchased by A. Hall in Sydney three seasons back. The Wanganui owner-trainer informed ma that the other three youngsters had never been 1 broken in, and were turned out at Wangaehu.' Turangapito will probably be at Manawatu and Stratford during the holiday meetings. K. Quinlivan's team for the Auckland Meeting will probably consist of Simonldes, Form. Up, Elocution, Silver Tongue Demagogue, and Piraeus. A. lleed increased' his total wins lo eighteen at Feilding, and is now leadin" H. Gray by one: The Auckland visitors to Foildinc Meeting included Mr. F. J.'M'Menainin (handicapper) and Mr. H. H. Hayr (secretary of the Av&ndale Jockey Club). I Although Tressida was paid up for in the Auckland Cup, she is unlikely to be seen at Ellcrslie. Her owner, 'Mr M Leod, came; through to Feilding to see her race there. She will probably be at Hastings at New Year time. Several Auckland, Clip and Railway Handicap- candidates were seen out at i< eliding. Last year th o form at Feildinc worked out well at, Ellerslie, Koesian and JBiaogno being successful at both places Ine Cup candidates seen out were Snub (who appears to be training off) and Tressida, whose form was not-good enough to warrant her being sent North. Five Railway Handicap candidates were seen out. Lingerie (who defeated Acre and Bukenvalo) did the best of 'them, and there are more unlikely things than that she will repeat the form of Bisogne last year and win the Railway. She has incurred 31b penalty. Birkenvale should again beat Simonidea, who cannot be at his best on Boxing Day. He was sore after racing at Feilding, and may require a few days' spell, which would put him back. The race won by l^a'nna at Feildi/ig wna only worth 210 sov^ to the winner, consequently sho does "not incur a penalty in tho Railway,- in which she is well in with 7.0. Her owner also has Hymestra (8.6) in the race, and may take the opportunity to give the latter a race at Wairarapa. .: Interlude' is unlikely to go up, and will probably be raS' n S-at Awapuni on Boxing Day. _Mr. G. M. Currie ,was present at the leilding Meeting when . Pennon won. Kulogy has a colt by imported Absurd trom Eulogy (dam of Pennon). Red Ribbon is reported to be training on satisfactorily in her work at Opaki and is considered to have more than an outside chance, in the Auckland Cup, Present intentions are that T. F. Quinlivan will take First Rain, Pontoon, Multiply, and Hendra to Auckland Poy the New Zealand Trotting Derby of 1921, V Bl yearlings have bpen engaged. :...■',

Nominations for all events at the Marton J.C. Summer Meeting close on Friday at 9 p.m. The total stakes for the one day amount to £1800, which are evenly distributed over the-eight events. As this meeting follows the Manawatu Summer Meeting on 26tli and 27th December,'and the racecourses are, only thirty miles distant, owners who have nominated at Manawatu should also bear in mind, the date of closing of nominations for Marton. ■■•
