Carbide is practically unprocurable in New Zealand at present; : The pre-war quotation was 35s to 37s per cwt. The present price is £7 18s. 6d and even £8 has been quoted. Otaki, which is dependent upon carbide for its street lighting, has had to discontinue the service. The contractor for lighting at Te Horo wrote to the Horowhenua County Council at its meeting on' Saturday (states the Levin Chronicle), asking for an increase in the contract price, and the matter was referred to the councillors for the riding to deal with. The contractor stated he had paid £718s 6d for the last supply. The Otago Daily Times states that the greater part of the next shipment of Australian wheat to arrive in Duuedin will be taken by local millers, the remainder probably going to a Northern port. Messrs. Williams and Co., Ltd., will cell to-morrow, in the Auction Arcade, Courtenay-place, toys, Christmas presents, and piano.
