S. Woolf has signed'on the Kaitoa as second officer . ' Mr. H. J. Doyle, chief officer on a Union Steam Ship Company's vessel, has gone to Auckland, and Mr. Metzer, second officer, has been temporarily promoted to the position. Sir A. Hunter Purvis has signed on the vessel as second officer After being used as, a coal hulk for some time, the Union Steam Ship Company's lima now on the Wellington Patent Slip,'is being recommissioned. The vessel is being re-rigged as a barquentiue owing to the present demand for more tonnage. TJie lima will be remembered as a very smart sailer, trading between Auckland and Australia with timber, for some time in the hands of Captain Schutze. 1 The vessel's hull, now undergoing a thorough overhaul on the Slip, is in a better.condition than was at first anticipated, and her rigging is being overhauled. As the lower masts were not removed, only the topmasts and ricEinc remain to be fitted. • Since Monday last the Patea bar has beenunworkable, and is still closed to shipping. The Waverley and the Hawera .have been-held up at Patea, and the Kapuni is waiting in Wellington for conditions, to improve. .Little' hope of improvement is; held out for a dayThe Mapourika left Greymouth at 4pm yesterday for Westport and Wellington. At this port she is due to-morrow'morning . Before leaving .Wellington for Cook Strait lights on Wednesday next the Government' steamer Hinemoa will have her boiler cleaned' and several minor repairs effected. ! ■• ■ Jlr. C. Daniels, who has been appointed to the new position of Inspector of Seamen at Auckland, is expected to '.'take'up -his' duties at the beginning of next week. As Inspector of Seamen, Mr. Daniels will be re. quired to keep a register of all seamen sailing out of Auckland, and will supply men for the ships when needed.
