THE DISASTER EXPLAINED

GENERAL MAURICE'S STATEMENT (bboter's telegram.) r, ,x, -o v . .^. LONDON, 7th November. General P. B Maurice (Director of Military Operations), reviewing the Italian position, admits that it is very serious, but declares that the statement that Yon Mackensen led 300,000 troops in a tremendous surprise attack is absolutely untrue. "Yon Mackensen has never been in Italy. The Germans there were led by Yon Bulow. Cadorna knew approximately the time, and was aware of the place to be attacked. The disaster was in a great measure due to the insidious German propaganda, which had spread further than Cadorna was aware. The withdrawal from the Tagliamento is part of the original plan arranged by General Cadorna before reaching that line." (Received November 9, 10 a.m.) T ' ... , , r LONDON, Bth November. In a speech at Manchester, Mr. Bonar Law said he believed the Italians would be able to stop the Germans till the British and French troops arrived If we obtained a battle front from the EngHsh Channel to the Adriatic the Italian reverse might be some advantage.
