NOTES ON THE RACING
(BT TELIGKAFH.) (FROM "SIR LANCBLOT.") CHRISTCHURCH, 7th November. For the opening event, the AshleyHandicap, . one mile, all started except Matty and Bellrock. Sisyphus drew the inside position, but got chopped out at the start and was last ■when they had gone a furlong. Subterfuge and The White King were quickest on their legs, but at six furlongs Kilbrogan was alongside the leader. They were prominent to the distance, where Winter Cherry put in a claim, and catching Subterfuge won by a length. Kilbrogan. got third place. Euripos, Placid, and Missouri were close up to the placed horses. The last named, by Danube—Miss Mischief, should win Taces when more experienced. The winner, Winter Cherry, was imported by her owner, being by Minoru—Flqrette, and | this was her first success. IMPEDIMENT WINS THE OAKS. The withdrawal of Missouri reduced the New Zealand Oaks field to four. Kilrea was fractious at the barrier, and got the worst of the send-off. Impediment was taken to the front, and at the mile post was showing out two • lengths clear of Elocution, Kilrea being last. When the six furlongs post was reached, with half the journey covered, Nanna had ■ moved up into second place. Half a mile from home Impediment was still sailing along in front. The only altera-. tion at the turn was that Kilrea headed Elocution. Impediment finished up her task well and won by four lengths from Nanna, with Elocution close up third. It was thought the hard race in the Derby affected Impediment, and Nanna was much better backed, so that those who stuck to Impediment got a good price. Two of the place-getters were sired by Demosthenes, who was represented in the race for the first time. Impediment has scored four times this season, and h36 proved a great bargain for her owner-trainer, who resides at Wood-rille. Ashley Reed, who rode Impediment, won the same race last year on Devotion. FAILURE OF FORM UP. The Criterion Handicap brought out a' field which included two place-getters in the Stewards'. It was a great betting race, Lingerie, Form Up, and Wrestler being supported in that order. Wrestler, on the outside, and Daytime appeared to jump out best, and whenthe course proper was reached they were showing the way to Lingerie. At the distance Daytime, on the rails, and Lingerie drew out, and, after a good finish, the favourite won by a, head, with Wrestler a length and a-half away. Moutoa Queen was fourth, and the others finished in a line, except Vandubhe, who was a bad last. Lingerie, then ridden by an apprentice, was considered unlucky in the Stewards'. Today she was ridden by C. Emerson, and she carried 71b overweight, and practically met Form Up on the same terms as in the Stewards', and just failed to put up the time registered in Monday's big. sprint race. When more seasoned she looks like turning out some good. :. IRWELL HANDICAP TO CHERRY ••■■•' ■ MART. There were no withdrawals from the Irwell -Handicap. Cotillion and Zia. were coapled. Backers went for Persic, who showed some form at Trentham, and Cherry ' Mart. The colours of Canamana showed up well when the field had settled down. She reached the course proper first but lost her position at the distance. Here Cherry Mart put in a strong claim, and although challenged in the last hundred yards by Risingham, secured the verdict by a clear length. Piraeus just managed to get third place from Persic, with Long Range next. Cherry Mart had improved with the racing ehe had at Masterton and Trentham, and scored her first win today. Persic carried about double the amount on Cherry Mart, and backers of the winner got a good price.
! GOOD PERFORMANCE BY FIERY CROSS. All seventeen acceptors For the Jockey Club Handicap were saddled up. It proved a great betting race, several of the runners being well supported. Multifiial u-as the first to show out, but before iliey had gone a furlong Fiery Cross took charge, and at halfway was showing the way to Rose Puik, Marsa, and Multifual. At the bend Fiery Cross and Rose Pink were well clear, with the colours of Seadown showing up on the rails behind them. Fiery Cross led into the straight. At the distance Rose Pink was done with, and Teka and Seadown put in a claim but could not reach Fiery Cross, who won by two lengths, SeadowTi a length away. Then came Cleft, Rorke's Drift, and Multifual. Two Trentham representatives, Miss Deval and Rose Pink, were next. Tt was a good performance on the part of the winner, who conceded weight to all his opponents except; Adjutant, led practically all the way and put up fast time. Fiery Cros6 was placed in the last East-er and" Autumn Handicaps, but this was his first win at Riccarton, where he is. trained. Any chance King Star had was extinguished by his leaving the mark badly. ESTLAND'S CANTERBURY CUP. Desert Gold was taken out of the Canterbury Cup, Mr. Lowry relying on Estland. Although there were only three runners the race brought together the first and third horses in the Cap and the Derby winner. It was a- slow-run race, eiich waiting on the other to make the pace. Passing the stand with a third of the journey covered, Snub led Eetland by three lengths, with Menelaus two lengths away. There was no change in the order when they reached the mile post. The pace was clapped on at the six fur- ■ longs, where Estiand drew level with Snub. Estland took charge, entering the straight, and although Menelaus passed Snub at the distance he could not reach Estland, who won by a length and a half. Snub was the same* distance away. The first .seven furlongs took lmin 37 3-ssec, and the last six furlongs lmin 13sec. DESERT GOLD SPRINT CHAMPION. There were seven withdrawals from the Electric Plate, leaving in eight runners. Desert Gold, making her first appearance it the meeting', was favourite, carrying more than half the money invested on the race. The champion scored with half a, length to spare from Croesus, who ran a remarkably good race considering ho I was conceding Sir. Lowry's mare weight. | Birkenvale just beat 80-Peep for third ! place after a punishing finish. The time J put up was not as fast as expected, but, I it is doubtful if Desert Gold could haves done much better. She could do no more ! than win. C. Emerson rode her in a confident manner, and also scored on Estland in J. O'Shea's absence. The result of the race does not make the two-year-old form out to be good. BoPeep won the Welcome Stakes in a tick slower time with two stone more on her back. She appeared on her toes to-day. EPSOM HIGH-WEIGHT TO ACRE. Daytime, Kilrush, and Euripos were scratched for the Epson High-Weight Handicap, leaving in a good field of twenty-three. The Fordell-trained Acre, making his first appearance at the meeting, was sent out a good favourite. He' began well and never looked like getting beaten. Sunny Climes, who beat Black Ada for second money, paid a remarkably good 1 price. This was the third successive win for Acre, who is by Linacre, who had _ a useful representative in the Dominion a couple of seasons back in Veronal, at present racing in Victoria.
