CAUSE OF THE DISASTER
ACTION OF DISAFFECTED TROOPS (FBBLISHED IH-THE TIMES.) ' .. „ , _". . „_ . . ' LONDON, 3rd November. - Mr. Ward iPnee states: "The principal cause of the Italian retreat was the action of a section of troops, disaffected by *he German peace propaganda in opening a gap in the heart of the Italian defences. The cutting off of the surrounding strong mountain positions beyond the river necessitated a withdrawal of the whole Isonzo Army, and the Car?o Army was compelled to follow If it had delayed the retirement for a single hour it would have been irretrievably lost. _ Many civilians Joined with fhe army in'the retreat. All manner of vehicles, mixed with baggage- wagons and army impedimenta blocked the roads for miles. The railways were blocked with trains The enemy rapidly followed the retreat, patrols occupying TJdine at 7 o'clpck on Sunday night, burning Cividaile, Grandprisca, and Palmanoya. The Germans tried to rush a bridge over the Tagliamento on Saturday night. The flooded stream defeated them, and swept numbers away. The Italians wiped out those who Succeeded in. crossing."
