There was a large audience in tho Town Hall Oonoert Chamber on Saturday evenJS 5!,- 10,. hear the 9° ncert £iven by the Wellington Harmonic Society, under tho loadarship -of Mr. H. Temple-White. Tho programme ■ comprised mainly choruses part songs, and madrigaU, by a foroe of between forty and 6fty singers, the parts being fairly evenly balanced, ' female voices slightly preponderating. Most of their item 6 were unaccompanied, and their performance gave evidence of careful trajming. The opening chorus, "God in the Thunderstorm" {Schubert), a etriklngly dramatic composition, was exoellently rendered, and the next choral item, Matona, Lovely Maiden," a madrigal by U. Lassus, a 16th century composer was so much to the taste of the audience' that it had to be repeated. It is a sweetly pretty molody with a captivating refrain Elgars -Evening Scenes" and "O, Happy Eyes were two other part songs of merit .Perhaps the best of tho combined work was ChaUmor's choral ode, "A Song of tho Sea, which concluded the concert it is a fine composition, with loads for the dittorent,sections and some striking passagos in unison, and was done full justice to by Mr. Temple-White's capable choiT T £, ri£ k Tu"}fy . (soprano) and Mr. Leonard Barnes (baritone) were the soloists. The former sang "Hush, My Littlo One , a lullaby by Bevignani, and *rodeno Clay's setting of "The Sands o Uee. Both were admirably sung, and tho singer in each instance had to respond ™, a™. on«>re- Mr. Barnes sang "Tho Erl King" (Schubert) and twb bracketed items, by Tschaikowsky and Ma«senet tosoectively Ho also was twice recalled. The Rev A. E. Hunt recited "the Highwayman, a dramatic poem by Noyes andDickens's "Boote at the Holly Tree Inn, with two other short pieces on being recalled. Miss Phyllis Hanify accompanied capably, and was especially successful in the difficult scoring of "The Erl King." Mr. Temple-White announced that tho fiocioty would give another concert in a few weeks' time, in aid of King- George's Dund for Sailors. Duo notice will be given of the date.
