MAGISTRATE'S COURT

To-day'e sitting of the Magistrate's Court was presided over by Mr. S. E. M'Carthy, S.M. : Eva Grell, who had nine previous convictions against her, .was charged with being a rogue and vagabond, in that she was foundry night in a private dwelling in Tui-street. It was shown that the defendant was living an immoral life,.and (Sib-Inspector M'llveney suggested that a term of reformative treatment might have a good effect. Grell wm sentenced* to one year's imprisonment with- hard" labour, to be followed- by three yeara' reformative treatment. • » A further remand tuTAto-morrow wasgranted in the case of JamesvM'lnemey, who was charged with failing to give notice of the change of his abode. It was stated that the defendant was drawn in the seventh ballot, and H was decided to give him ah opportunity of interviewing the Defence authorities. There were extenuating circumstances in the case of Henry Anderson, who .was charged with carrying on as a secondhand dealer without a license. ' The defendant, for whom Mr. C. W. Neilsen appeared, was fined 10a, with costs. For driving a motor-car on the wrong side of the road, Thomas IT. Cotter was fined 10s, with costs. Fines -of £1, with costs, were imposed in the case of-the following persons who were charged with riding motor-cycles on the Hutt-road' cycle track:—James Dawson, John Domney, Ernest Gregory, •Joseph William Preston, Da,vid P.ea. and ■Bert Henry Russell. Thomas Peard, who rode a motor-cycle 'without a registered 1' number attached, was fined 20s, while for having no light on his cycle, Albert J. Pringle was penalised in the sum of 10s. On a. chargo of failing to attend drill, Eric Flaws was fined 20s,- with costs; while Edward Scott, who obstructed a cadet parade, was similarly dealt with.
