DEATH OF MR. G. TATTLE
One of the oldest, if'not the oldest of the native-born residents of Wellington, Mr. Ge'o. Tattle, died at his residence in Lip-man-street yesterday evening at the, age of 75 years. Mr. Tattle was one of the first white children bora in Wellington. He was apprenticed to the printing trade at the office of the Wellington Independent, one of his. feUowrapprontices being Mr. •W % M. Muir, of' Majoribanks-sfcreet, whose father was part proprietor of the paper with the late ,Mr. Thomas W. M'Konzie. After completing his Apprenticeship Mr. Tattle went to the Westi Coast, where tiie gold rush was on, bud he returned to Wellington after a while, and became identified with the Government Printing Office, then in its eariy days. Ho was one of the < most valued members of the composing staff, and rose in tithe to become first o-vorseof of the jobbing department, then firefc officer, and finally acting-superintending overseer. He retired on 31st March, 1909, having completed forty years' service, in the course of which he had seldom! been absent a day from work. Mr. Tattle was arc old member .of - the Tarano-ki-sfcreet Wesley Church, and'with his family had worshipped in the Manners-street Charon which was burnt down in 1879. He was one of the oldest members of the Loyal Britannia Lodge of Oddfellows, Manchester Unity, and was also for many_ years a prominent player with the Victoria BowlJ ing Club. In matters ■touching the city reserves and the Botanical Gardens be took a keen interest. Mr. Tattle _ leaves a widow and ah adult family of six sans, and four daughters. Mrs. Georgo Faulkner, of Napier, is his only, living' sister. The sons are Mr. G. A. Tattle, of Awahuri; Mr. H. T. Tattle, West Australia; Sorgt.-Major F. J. Tattle- (on. active service); Mr. F. 0. Tattle, Ba.wkes Bay manager for the Standard Insurance Co.; Messrs. L. W. and A. H. Tattle, of, the Dominion Motor Vehicles, Ltd. . The daughters arc Mesdames ■ Job. Seo-rte, C. B. Norwood, H. B. Plther, and! -B. J. Botholl. By next month Mr. Tattle would have celebrated his fiftieth yoax of msur,riod life. One of his sons, PraiKate' Philip Tattle, who was the schoolmaster at Lang>bush. Wairaraptt, whan he enKstod, w«b killed at Gollipoli. Ho left with tho Miaia Body, and was ono of tho heroes who overran their ardera and lost their lives ia the famous charge oti Bth Mey, 1915.
