The newspapers are unanimous in regarding the replies of the Central Empires to the Papal Peace Note as a grotesque patchwork of reticence and subterfuge. They describe the authors as obsequious charlatans, who, while repeating the kissing of the Papal slipper. are\ really "pulling the Pope's leg."
