The boring for petroleum oil at Chertsey (Canterbury) has at last assumed a decidedly hopeful aspect (states tho Christchurch Press), and the operations j during tho past few weeks have afforded good evidence that oil exists beneath the Canterbury Plains. The bore is now .down to a depth of 1400 ft, with a 75-inch casing of pipe, and for the last 30ft alternate beds of sand, a greasy l cement, and beds of what are technically | known as "butter petroleum" have been gone through. The works manager, says ' that he is more than satisfied with the present indications, and feels confident j from his long and varied experience in boring for-oi] in other parts that they will eventually strike a flow of oil a-t Chertsey. ■ Messrs. ,C.
