Among the many preparations for Thorndon Bay at the Red Croas Shop is •the scheme for surprise packets in connection with the .gift recital by Mrs. P, Nathan and Miss Beere on Saturday!, 22nd September. Some of .the beautiful .gifts for these packets are on view in the Bristol "windows, and there . are lib-! era! orders given by leading shops in Wellington as well. Mrs. Fulton, of Goldc-rs Hill, 'would be glad to receive surprise packets or bags from Thorndon. people who are interested in the Red Cross, and these should be sent in as soon as possible. It was decided last nighj> at a meeting of the Women Teachers' Association that the members would not undertake, a-s a. body, to take a stall at Paddy's Market, though, as individuals, all will be glad to help. ■ Friends and supporters .Qf the great work that the V.M.C.A. is doing for our soldiers at home and abroad, and any who are anxious to secure. fresh home-made supplies from town or country, are re r , minded of the Red. In addition to home-made cookery, jams, sweets and flowers, there will be special cakes prepared for sending a* .Christmas, gifts to' boys at the front. The room to-morrow . will be in charge of Mrs. Rawson and Miss Barnes. The organisers of the ■enterprise, Mesdamoe Bray and Piper, wish to express .their-thanks for help ref ceived- from all members of the Ladies' Auxiliary, and also from -a number of other supporters. All proceeds from the roofn goto the V.M.C.A. War Funds. : The Auckland W.N.R. is very; busy working for "Our Day" next month, and ! is organising a children's stall on a. large I scale. Recently tlie members also offered to provide literature for troop trains, leaving Auckland, an offer which was gladly accepted., ,200 papers and magazines each month being asked for, 1 as the Auckland-Wellington* run is e6 long and tedious. The W.*N.R. has also ! offered to help in the case of the soldiers' | graves,, and hopes to be able to do something later. The Reserve has adopted a yery smart uniform, with adaptable collar, Ijelt, etc., which may be worn for the nursing, signalling, and rifle'sections. I Altogether the Auckland branch of the .Reserve may be congratulated on good work and initiative in "breaking new ground." .. , ;
Mrs. F. Drayton Bamfield ha« returned from the South after six months' holiday in Dtmedin. . < A beautiful bouquet of flowers, made by Mrs. Lindo Levien, was presented to Miss Campbell at the close of the. performance at the Grand Opera House last 1 night, as a mark of appreciation from the mothevs of her pupils. , The death of Miss Elizabeth Bull, well known in the Wairarapa, took place at the residence of Mr. Wood, in Master-' ton, recently. Miss Bull was 83 years' of age, and had been a resident of the Wairarapa for 37 years. The marriage of Lieutenant Ralph F. R. Beetham, N.Z.E.F., to Mrs. Hutchison, eldest daughter of the late My. William Booth, of Carterton, and of Mrs.. , Booth, took. place at Waltem-on-Thames! on 6th September. Mrs. Hutchison 'left for England to take aip war work severalj months ago, and shortly after her arrival; there was soon busily engaged in help-' ing with the work for the wounded. Lieutenant Beetliam, who is. the eldest son of Mr. and Mit>. H. H. Beetham,! Brancepeth, left with the Main Body of the Expeditionary Force, and was wounded at the, Battle of ■Messines. Orders for. cakes, which are being made by Thorndon ladies in aid of the! Red Cross Funds, must be given not later than 21st September. The Wellington Bed Cross Shop Committee "met in the Mayor's room, of the Town Hall yesterday afternoon, the. Mayoress (Mrs. J. P. Luke) presiding.: Account?, were passed for payment, and' various matters in connection with "Our Day" and ' "Paddy's Market" were discussed. It -was decided that after "Our Day" appeal was over, the committee should meet on the first. Monday, in the ; month instead of every third, as at pre-^ sent. An excellent record of work iv. connection with the shop, was reported.: and the secretary, Mrs.- Firth, stated thai 'there 1, was .in the bank on amount of £1200, and ..6300 had been scut to England since the. last meeting. There were some good days to look forward to iir connection with organisations that arc taking; charge of and stocking the shop, and it is expecltd that the finances will be very materially augmented. Owing; to the fnct'that "Paddy's Market" (which was originally fixed for this week) had ■been postponed till a.week later, no particular arrangements have bceon made in •connection, with this coining Friday at the 1 shop, and contributions will be gladly al'oepted. Flowers will' be sold j'is usual by Miss Cooper and Miss Mo?s, sd that in any case the room wiJl be open. On lha following Friday 'next week) the Karon branch of the W.N.JI. will stock and be in charge of the shop.
According to The' Post's London _ correspondent a White Paper oil a single sKp of paper was recently published containing a supplementary estimate for £5 fur the Office of Works, being the amount required " for the -removal of the grille in the Ladies' Gallery of the House of Commons." This amount will be moved in the House by the' First Commissioner of Works (Sir A. Mond), and the fate "of the grille will depend on the vote.
The Post's London correspondent writes that a New Zealand lady, who calls herself " E'da," has produced a very smart illustrated booklet called "Miss Blighty of Blighty."' It is published, by the Australian Trading and Agency Companies, Ltd., and Messrs. Gordon and Gdtch are th» New Zealand agents.
Maternity allowances to the amount of £662,035. were paid in Australia last year. This was an.increase of 458 allowances compared with the preceding \ear. ,
