The s.s. Waverley was able to enter the port recently about an hour after high water, and left again at half tide. - Such a thing would have been out of the question a year or so ago (says the Patea Press). The improvement of the port is attributed chiefly to the raising of the walls, this work preventing the sand from entering the river in large quantities. Between the eastern wall and the guide pier the channel is both wider and deeper than it has been for some considerable time. In fact, it is at present wide and deep enough to turn any of the shipping companies' boats in. As the walls are extended the entrance will be still further improved' Up till 3 o'clock this afternoon there was still no sign of the scow Hazel Repton, due here from Greymouth The Union Company's manager at Greymouth telegraphed this morning that there was a heavy fog over the port, but it was hoped to despatch the Mapourika and another vessel for Wellington on this morning"s tide BY%ELEGRAPH AUCKLAND, Sth September To sail—Monowai (7 p.m.), for Southern ports.
