The Matin states that the German losses in the defence of Lens already amount to 16,000, or a quarter of the number engaged. Moreover, since the 23rd August, thirty-five divisions have been engaged between Meekem and Hollebeke (Ypres front), where the losses averaged '3500 each. Eight divisions there remain in the' fighting line; nineteen have been withdrawn, severely mauled; and eight others have been transferred to quieter sectors. The Germans have called up the 1920 class. Youths of seventeen have already enlisted in certain districts in Eastern Prussia, Hesse, and Westphalia.
