THE STRANDED OPOURI
Advice has been received from the Marine Department that Captain Lobb I (Westport Coal Company's shore, staff) and Captain Crawford, of Lyttelton, have been appointed nautical assessors at the Magisterial enquiry, to be held at Greymonth on Monday next concerning the stranding of the Opouri. The on-, gineer assessor will be Mr. E. P. Tur-' ncr, of the Christchurch Tramways. ..'.
The Greymouth Star states that Captain M'Pherson' {Deputy-Harbourmaster : at Greymouth) says that both the bar ' a.nd river were suitable for the- entry of the Opouri, as was borno out by the fact that the Waimea, which entered' ten minutes before, got. in without the i least trouble. The Opouri came, over t the bar in a splendid position, and was | "well in the river .when the .steering gear., failed to' act, and the vessel drifted" ashore. No instructions had been issued p ti> utilise .'the tug Westland and attempt! to refloat the Opmiri. Questioned as. to the' chances of-refloating the vessel, Captain M'Plierson declined to express any; opinion. If the weather remained fine j something might be done, but otherwisa! the vessel would probably breal* ■
