MAGISTRATE'S COURT

Mr. D. 6. A. Cooper, S.M., occupied the Bench at to-day's sitting of the Magistrate's Court, when miscellaneous cases were dealt with. Kathleen Henderson, admitted a, previous conviction, for drunkenness, and was fined 10a, with tiie alternative of serving 48. hours in .gaol. A first-offending inebriate received; lenient treatment.

Inspector Marsack stated that it was an ordinary case of shoplifting, the shirt being taken from outside a shop and sold to a second-hand dealer for Is. A fine of 20s, with the option of three days' imprisonment, was imposed. ' For failing to give notice of the change of his abode in accordance with the provisions of the Military Service Act, Henry Mather was fined 20s and costs. Bylaw cases were dealt with as under: —Michael Leary and Sooka Pema (a •Hindoo), each fined 5s and costs for allowing stock to wander at large; Walter Newall, leaving a vehicle unattended, fined ss, and costs; Ivo Greer and (i. D. Hansford, driving motor-Oars with insufficient lights, fined 10s and! 5s respectively; ,F. O'Neil, leaving vehicle unattended, fined 20s; Thomas Connelly, who drove a motor-car on the southern fide of the Courfcenay-place plantation, was convicted and discharged. "'Tills is not a bad case; the Irian's conduct was to some extent excusable," stated the City Solicitor (Mr. J. O'Shea), in reference to a charge against George Moatos of negligently driving a motorcar in Courtenay-place. It was stated that defendants car collided with another vehicle, and as far as. defendant was concerned it was a' mishap rather than a breach of the 'bylaws. Moates was merely convicted and discharged.
