BRIGHT, BUT SQUALLY
At daybreak this morning conditions looked very gloomy, and. in view of this the sunny, albeit somewhat ■ squally,, weather which has prevailed to-day has come as a pleaeing' surprise The city was fortunate last night in escaping tho severe electric disturbance which was felt in the upper portion of tho Hutb Valley and also in Marlborough, Nelson, and on the West Coast. Seventeen points of_ rain fell locally during the night. Rivers are high on the West Coast of the South Island, but fair tp cloudy weather has ruled on the East Coast, although unsettled and cloudy conditions have prevailed elsewhere. Westerly winds, strong to gale_, are forecasted, and an unsteady glass is probable. The weather is likely to continue squally.
