Mr. C. A. Burton, who met his death by drowning in the Waiiganui River on Sunday, went to Wanganui from Hokitika in 3900, having been appointed to the Registrarship of the Supreme Court and kindred offices there. He was stationed in Wangiimii for thirteen years, when he was appointed Clerk of the Court »t Auckland. Ho retired last yenr after having completed overy forty years in the Government service. Mr. Barton has left a widow and family of six. The daughters are Mrs. A. B. Gibbons (Waiujainii) and Mrs. J. Bull (Waipukurau), and the sons are Mr. R. Barton (of Armstrong and Craiji), Lieut. Gerald Barton (who went nway with the Main Body, and has just left New Zealand again after returning for a commission), Sergt. J. Barton (who is in camp), and Mr. Reg. Barton (who was engaged on the farm with his father).
