Fires in the Manawatu Gorge, besides destroying the picturesque beauty of the bush, bring undesired. results to the Kairanga County Council, which maintains the road. A reference to the bush fires and their effects was made at the county meeting yesterday by the engineer (Mr. A. H- "M. Wright), who stated that last summer the bush on the upper side, of the road at the Ash-' hurst end was destroyed by- fire, with the result that slips had been worse this winter than for a number of years.
