MAGISTRATE'S COURT

Several inebriates, including two first offenders, were dealt with at to-day's sitting of the Magistrate's Court, over which Mr. S. £. M'Car.thy, S.M., presided. Tor drunkenness, Thpmas Moran was fined £5, and William Patterson £3, the alternatives being li- days and seven days' imprisonment respectively. Arising* out of a serious'disturbance in Adelaide-road last night, three burly individuals named Thomas Matthew M'G-ill, Patrick Carlton M'Gill, and Michael Francis Carrick appeared in the dock to answer various charges. The first-named defendant was charged with drunkenness, using obscene language, assaulting Patrick Joseph M'Oraih, and resisting Constable Dowling; Patrick Carlton M'Gill was charged with obi structing Constable Dowling, and Carrick with inciting Thomas Matthew M'Gill to resist Constable Dowling, and assaulting James Mallett, .who was assisting the constable. On the application of Snbrlnspeotor Daw, all the accused were remanded till Saturday, bail being allowed, each in his own bond of £25 and a, surety for a similar amount. Mr. P. W. Jackson appeared for the M'Gills.

Thomas Smith was charged with being an idle and disorderly person, in that he begged alms in Taranaki-street. Accused stated that lie had been away from his wife for six months, and during that time had only sent her £4 or £5. It was plain that he was living the life of a vagrant, B-nd Smith was sent to gaol for three months.
