To-day's sitting of the Magistrate's Coin-t was presided over by Mr. L. G. Reid, S.M. Samuel Heyworth, for whom Mr. P. W. Jackson appeared,, proceeded against Frederick Williams on a, charge of assault. The evidence showed that the two men, who were carting coal from the Railway Wharf on the 20th instant, had a dispute concerning their work, with tho result that Williams used his fists on Heyworth's face with disastrous effect. The accused was fined 40s, with costs, and it was directed that half the fine should be paid to the informant. The alternative was fixed at H days' imprisonment. An elderly man named James M'Keever, who suffers from deafness, had no hesitation in admitting that he 'was "deemed to be a rogue and vagabond," in that he was found by night on the King's Wharf. M'Keever was found sleeping on a heap of straw near the wool stores, and was in possession of several loose matches. The elderly vagrant was sent to gaol for one month. Theft of various articles, including shoes, an umbrella, and two lengths of suitings, was alleged against Henry Stevens, a man with a "list" and a multitude of excuses. He was sent to gaol for two months on each of the three charges, the sentences to be cumulative.

James O'Connell appeared to answer a charge of committing theft from tho person of William Senior on 22nd August last. Several witnesses were called for the prosecution, and the accused, who was defended by Mr. P. W. Jackson, pleaded not guilty.
