INVESTMENT BY SAILORS
SPECIAL FACILITIES SUGGESTED,
Tho Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke., C.M.G.) and- the secretary. ;of the Merchant Service Guild (Captain- Macindoe) had an 'interview' with' Mr.'' Morris, Secretary of ■the-Post and' Telegraph Department, today, with the object of facilitating the sale of war certificates -to seamen on coastal steamers,; ..Although many difficulties presented themselves, a scheme has been suggested which will probably bear "fruit in'the "near future. The preseat idea is that when ships are being paid a certain number of certificates should be on hand, so that members of the crew -will be- able to buy them at once without having the trouble of going ashore. With the co-operation of the shipping companies and the Government, the scheme would, it is considered, augment War Loan subscriptions considerably. Although publicity is given to the loan in the, newspapers, seafaring men seldom'read these matters, so it has been decided'thai circulars shall be sent round to the crews, of each ship and posters placed in conspicuous places. Thus each man will have a thorough knowledge of the conditions under which the certificates a.re being sold. It is thought that a groat amount of money that is now finding its way into the Post Office Savings Bank win be diverted to the loan, both for patriotic reasons and because of the better, return.that will be given.
